Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear
On March 4, 2016, FNS hosted a luncheon briefing on the newly introduced Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear (GAIN) initiative. The forum’s panel consisted of the program’s leads: Mr. Ray Furstenau, Department of Energy (DOE), and Dr. Kemal Pasamehmetoglu, Idaho National Laboratory (INL). In particular, the panel addressed the challenges with creating effective public-private partnerships necessary to move forward with advanced reactor concepts. GAIN’s objective aims to solve that challenge by enabling the rapid and cost-effective development of innovative nuclear energy technologies towards market readiness.
In an effort to provide a first-hand perspective, the forum also included remarks from industry representative Dr. Pete Pappano, X-energy. Dr. Pappano highlighted how X-energy was recently awarded a five-year DOE grant, which will assist in developing their concept for an Xe-100 Pebble Bed High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor (HTGR). Resources provided from the GAIN initiative will also be a significant asset during this process.
